AFP Mid Hudson Plans their 2010 Programs

The Association of Fundraising Professionals, Mid-Hudson Valley Chapter, is working on their proposed list of audio-conferences for 2010 and are looking for some feedback.

Geared towards not-for-profit leaders, volunteers and especially development staff, these events are designed to be mid-day lunch breaks to fit into your already busy calendar.

If you are responsible for fundraising in your organization, or actively a part of the process, you should look into joining the AFP. There are few resources as valuable then sharing ideas among your peers.

Performing Arts Presenters Gathering & Reception This Monday

NYSA Announces Changes to their Deadlines and Fiscal Year

The New York State Council of the Arts (NYSA), the top organization of Arts in Orange, just announced changes to their own grant deadlines for 2010. This is for organizations that need to apply directly to NYSCA for grant requests, not for those who qualify for the grants that come through Arts in Orange.

From their announcement:

In Fiscal Year 2011 (calendar year 2010), we will implement a series of changes to NYSCA’s annual application calendar in an effort to further improve our grantmaking process and better serve New York’s cultural community. As a result, a number of important deadlines, including the close of registration, will now shift to earlier points in the calendar year. Given these changes, it is tremendously important that you take careful note of NYSCA’s FY11 calendar, provided below. Please pay particular attention to NYSCA’s registration deadline (January 22, 2010) and first application deadline (February 17, 2010).

NYSCA CALENDAR – FISCAL YEAR 2011

December 15, 2009 – FY11 Application Guidelines Available
January 4, 2010 – Registration Opens
January 22, 2010 – Registration Closes
February 17, 2010 1st – Application Deadline
February 17, 2010 – CDP Data Profile Completion Deadline (optional)

Understanding youth culture to better reach your audience

As the beginning of this report states – “Social network sites, online games, video-sharing sites, and gadgets such as iPods and mobile phones are now fixtures of youth culture.”

I think we might hear this every few years, because of course adults by nature are out of touch with youth culture. But this is quite different; this report is from a study on how our next generation interacts and learns within a digital information context.

I can spoil the results a bit – it concludes that all of the hanging out web sites – social networking, etc are essential to more structured and important tasks of direct learning online.

I believe this report is an essential read to anyone working in an arts organization that is struggling to find an online presence or to understand how they can take their art to a more digital medium. Unlike many opinions and reports on such things, this one is direct and somber in its results. Too many times, you hear or see a report and it’s nothing more then a thin veil to pseudo-science. This is a good hard look at how our culture is changing.

By no means is this a step-by-step guide or easy answer. It’s just the base, the floor to work up from. I believe if you want to create an experience that your patrons can become a part of, you need to start understanding how more non-structured actions change when things are placed online.

NYS Presenters Program Meeting in November for Presenting Organizations and Artists Alike

Leanne Tintori Wells, the Director of Presenters for the New York State Council of the Arts (NYSCA) emailed us recently to talk about the series of networking events being organized for presenting organizations in New York State. These events are focused on presenting organizations, but presenting artists are also welcome to come, network and join in the discussions as well.

The events are being coordinated with, New York State Presenters is a consortium of state-wide presenting organizations.

“These gatherings are open to all presenting organizations, both NYSCA and non-NYSCA funded, along with community-based organizations who may be interested in presenting activities in the future… Each of the gatherings will feature a panel of New York State based performing artists such as the Paul Taylor 2 Dance Company, composer and violinist, Daniel Bernard Roumain, about the potential of developing new audiences for your venue.”

The gathering for the Hudson Valley will be held on Thursday, November 19th at the Fisher Center for the Arts at Bard College, 10 am – 3 pm.

There is no charge for the event, and both organizations that present events and are looking for an audience, and presenting artists who are looking for venues are encouraged to attend.

Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts Workshop – Dia:Beacon

Dia:Beacon has been hosting a number of workshops given by the VLA, a fantastic organization of volunteer lawyers for the arts.

They are hosting one on 17 October, 2-5 pm focused on the “Fiscal Sponsorship Model to Structure and Support Art Projects”

Admission to the talk, which includes museum admission, is $10. For program reservations, call 845.440.0100 x19 or email rsvpVLA@diaart.org.

Most of their programs are held at their 53rd St offices in the city, but they are really worth looking into. Check out their web site and head over to their calendar link. One series is how to start your own for-profit arts business, which would be an excellent workshop for those looking into or new to such endeavors.

The Biggest Problem Facing the Arts

This blog post just ran across our desk, via the NYSAAE’s blog. Michael Kaiser is the President of the JF Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, and while the outlet for this commentary seems unusual (the Huffington Post, known more for its politics), the opinion is no less poignant.

This week we will welcome ten new arts management fellows to the Kennedy Center. These talented young people will spend an academic year with us studying the many elements of arts management including planning, marketing, programming, and fundraising. They will work on major projects in our numerous departments and participate in high level meetings with senior staff, donors and board members.

This Fellowship program, now in its ninth year, is but one project of the Kennedy Center Arts Management Institute. We also have developed programs for arts organizations of color, international arts managers, arts managers in Washington D.C., New York City, and the Midwest and for the training of board members of arts organizations.

Why does the Kennedy Center devote so many resources to these programs? Because the central problem facing the arts today is not a lack of flute players, choreographers, actors or painters. The main challenge the arts world must address is the lack of a large, trained corps of managers who know how to find resources, attract audiences and other constituents and provide support to our artists.

Arts management is a young field. While wonderful impresarios have operated for centuries, serious codification of the rules of arts management began less than fifty years ago. And while we have a number of academic programs offered by universities across the nation, there are simply not enough of them, and several are too academic in their approach. Arts management, after all, is a practical field, like medicine, and must be taught through real-time, real world experiences.

There are, of course, a large number of wonderfully talented arts leaders; many of them were self-taught, others learned from a mentor. But there are not enough of these excellent leaders to serve our many arts organizations. Smaller arts organizations have a particular challenge with management. All too often, when managers distinguish themselves in small organizations, they are wooed away by larger, more prestigious institutions that can afford to pay higher salaries. The small organizations, which enjoyed a period of great entrepreneurship and growth, find themselves unable to attract equally talented replacements.

Arts leaders in the next decades will face radical changes in technology, a generation of potential audience members who did not participate in the arts at school, ticket prices that disenfranchise whole blocks of our population and on-line activities that provide serious competition for audiences. If the arts are going to survive this period of transition, we need to invest far more heavily in arts management than we have in the past.

Strong, trained, talented arts administrators will find solutions to this growing list of problems. They will help their organizations adapt and thrive and they will provide the support artists need to do their work.

But I fear that unless we address the arts management challenge, too many arts organizations will fail to find proper solutions to these challenges and we will see too many talented artists without the resources they deserve and too many communities without access to the arts and arts education.
