American Classical Orchestra

Carlo Farina was an Italian Baroque composer and earliest violin virtuosos.  His work, the Capriccio Stravagante is his most well known compositions and was highly innovative in its time (the early 1600s) for his use of creating techniques for imitating animal noises with the violin.

Not only will  The American Classical Orchestra be performing works from Farina, Motzart and others, but they will also be performing on period instruments.  It is highly unusual for such an orchestra, using a selection of almost 400 year old instruments to me assembled in Orange County.

After the concert there will be a meet and greet with the performers.  Doors open at 6 pm.

Celebrate the holidays at a special concert at the Newburgh Free Library on Sun., Dec. 13 at 3 p.m. The free concert features vocalist Maureen Morrissey and keyboardist Steve Kessler performing music for the holiday season. In addition, the program will include a performance by the Voices of Hope Children’s Choir, a community organization for children in grades K-6 that is funded by St. George’s Church in Newburgh. Refreshments will be supplied by the Friends of the Newburgh Free Library.

No stranger to the Hudson Valley, Maureen Morrissey might best be described “incredibly versatile”. She masterfully uses her remarkable range, from soft and sweet soprano to warm and expressive contra alto, when performing an almost unbelievably diverse repertoire from American songbook standards of the 30’s & 40’s to cabaret, classical and more. Maureen has been a featured performer with the Bodles Opera House Variety Show and lead singer with the New York Swing Exchange and the Klassics. Other groups Maureen has appeared with include USMA Jazz Knights at West Point, The Saints Of Swing and pianist Dave Myers.

Cajun Sounds in the Hudson Valley

‘Bons Temp Roulez…Let the good times roll!,‘ as they say in Cajun country, Louisiana. Sugarloaf Music is proud to present, direct from New Orleans’ most famous music club, Tipitina’s, The Bruce Daigrepont Cajun Band, winner of the Big Easy Award for Best Cajun Group and Grammy nominee for two extraordinary ’fai do do’ dance-party concerts.

Coupled with Daigrepont’s appearance for two evenings at the Pavilion of the Lycian Performing Arts Center on Kings Highway in Sugarloaf,  Friday December 4^th and Saturday, December 5^th, attendees will get free dance lessons.  Lessons begin at 7:30 p.m. followed by a dance-concert at 8:00.  Tickets may be purchased at Village Music on Main Street in Warwick and Van Gelder Music, Route 17M in Monroe.  For more information and reservations, call (845) 258- JAZZ (5299).

On the heels of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Sugarloaf Music Series made a commitment to host at least one New Orleans-based artist in a series of concerts and educational workshops in the Hudson Valley and northern New Jersey. They selected the Bruce Daigrepont Cajun Band. “Their appearance here was so well received by the community-at-large in 2005 and the  Warwick Valley School District, that, by popular demand, Sugarloaf Music in partnership will with Zatarain Foods wiill host their return to Warwick Middle School and Sanfordville School, both co-sponsored by their respective PTA‘s,” says Russ Layne, Executive Director of Sugarloaf Music.

Bruce Daigrepont was born in New Orleans.  His parents, from a rural Cajun farming community in Avoyelles Parish (County), Louisiana, moved to New Orleans shortly after World War II. Cajun French is their first language which is evinced in Daigrepont’s music—totally sung in French. “Gumbo and fricassee are almost always simmering on our stove,” explains the Cajun Music Hall of Fame artist. “We never get tired of those flavors.”

Bruce grew up in a family surrounded by music.  Every family gathering included singing and playing traditional Cajun music. His first instrument, at the age of five, was a guitar his father gave him. At the age of 20, after attending the annual Festival Acadians in Lafayette, Louisiana, he became inspired to play the accordion.  In less than two years, he had formed his own band, instituted Cajun music at the Maple Leaf Bar in New Orleans and almost single-handedly popularized Cajun music, a genre exclusively heard in rural Cajun country.  In 1986, his weekly dance concerts became so popular, he was able to move his performances to New Orleans’ Tipitina’s.

Fast becoming one of Cajun music’s more popular ambassadors, he has been called upon to perform at Lincoln Center, the Wolf Trap Center for the Performing Arts, and the National Folk Festival. His most poignant annual appearances in the Canadian maritime provinces of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick brings him back to his Acadian roots. The Acadians, of French ancestry, were expelled from Canada back in the mid-1700s.

Daigrepont has made several well-received recordings for the Rounder Recording Company.  His infectious, contemporary music “…is pure joi de vivre,” says Layne. “In less than 30 minutes, one can learn to dance Cajun and even zydeco and get a full aerobic workout.”

Springing from collaborations between founders performing today – actor Nigel Gore, violinist Charles Sherba and violist Consuelo Sherba – AUREA’s concerts combine poetry, drama, epistles, classical and folk music, puppetry, and movement into performances that sweep from intimate chamber settings to major theatrical venues.

Pacem in Terris

The first half of the program will include works from Diego Ortiz , Henry Purcell, Ernst Gottlieb Baron, and Mauro Giuliani. The second half of the program will be an all French “hit-parade” inspired by Pacem in Terris founder, Dr. Frederick Franck’s book Simenon’s Paris, including works by Gabriel Fauré, Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel, Francis Poulenc, and Jacques Ibert.

Zeh and Wiley began their musical collaboration as concertmaster and conductor respectively of the Greenwich Village Orchestra in 1997. Their chamber music duo began in 2003 at Pacem in Terris. Since then they have returned as annual guests. Wiley has performed at Pacem in Terris since the summer of 1987.

For the balance of the program Hayes and Dalby, will be joined by violist, Meena Bhasin, and cellist, Julia MacLaine. Bhasin, MacLaine, and Dalby are fellows and alumni of The Academy, a post-graduate fellowship of Carnegie Hall and the Juilliard School that links a performer’s life with arts advocacy training, and an extensive teaching residency in New York City public schools. They are passionate about discovering connections between communities through music.

Originally from the Netherlands, flutist Albert Brouwer now lives in Canada. Principal flutist for the Springfield Symphony Orchestra and Vermont Symphony Orchestra, he is also a member of the Albany Symphony Orchestra, and substitutes in the Montreal Symphony Orchestra. Brouwer teaches at Bishops University (Lennoxville,Quebec).

Stéphanie Moreau, flutist, studied at the Conservatoire de musique du Québec, graduated from McGill University, and completed a master’s degree in musicology at Université de Montréal. She played in the Orchestre du Conservatoire de musique du Québec, in the National Youth Orchestra of Canada, and in the McGill Symphony Orchestra. Moreau is a member of the Hortus Musicae ensemble and regularly performs concerts in the Montréal, New England and Mauricie areas.

Cellist Alice Robbins earned degrees at Indiana University and the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. Appearing as viola da gamba soloist with the Washington Bach Consort and the New England Bach Festival Orchestra, she is also principal cellist with Arcadia Players and performs with Boston’s Handel & Haydn Society, the Boston Early Music Festival, the Violins of Lafeyette, and the New York City Opera. Robbins is a member of the Five College Early Music faculty at Smith and Mount Holyoke Colleges and the Historic Performance faculty at Boston University.

Harpsichordist Gregory Hayes plays harpsichord continuo with the Vermont and Springfield (MA) Symphony Orchestras and the Albany Symphony. A regular participant in the New England Bach Festival and the Marlboro Music Festival, he also plays on the Mohawk Trail Concerts series. A graduate of Amherst College and the Manhattan School of Music, Hayes teaches at Dartmouth College and the Greenwood Music Camp in Cummington (MA), and is music director for the Unitarian Society of Northampton and Florence. Hayes, co-musical director of Pacem in Terris, has played here since 1975.

Filled with jazz, blues and big band swing, this concert sensation is held every Wednesday and Thursday in July and August at 6:30 to 8:30 pm on the Newburgh waterfront. This years’ schedule is exceptionally dynamic and diverse. It features Grammy award winners “The Reese Project” and acclaimed jazz artists Ali Jackson, drummer extraordinaire from Jazz at Lincoln Center. There will also be a new component to the series this year to help salute the Quadricenttenial celebration. The concerts are a “bring your own chair event.” They are free and open to the public.
