A wonderful Hudson River exhibition recently wrapped up at the Samuel Dorsky Museum of art on the SUNY New Paltz campus . For those who were able to attend, you know that it was absolutely stunning. The museum had various shows, depicting life along the Hudson, and I was particularly drawn to the work of local Orange County resident, Greg Miller.

Miller’s photographs were arranged from south to north and allowed spectators to walk along the river, enjoying the vivid images he managed to create. The images were so striking that if you stood long enough, looking into the landscape, you could picture yourself atop Storm King Mountain or aside the George Washington Bridge.

The first image that caught my eye was that of a rainbow over Bear Mountain. The image brilliantly showcased the light in the lower right quadrant with complete adoration. While there were many distractions, and places for my eyes to wander, I instantly narrowed in on the rainbow and the other elements became secondary.

Another photograph which caught my eye was that of Stockport farm, taken in 2007. The image was that of a sunset and what my mother always considered “sky blue pink.” I’m certain this wasn’t an original phrase but I have always attributed that time of night to her and when I first heard the term. Standing there, it harkened me back to my childhood and brought with it a sense of comfort. It was one of those moments where I was transported back in time; I was on my porch watching the sunset as opposed to standing amidst other museum onlookers.

While the majority of the prints were bright and vibrant, others had a dark appeal. It proved Millers talent, showcasing not only the majesty of the Hudson River but also the gritty underbelly it tends to possess.

As I was about to leave, I noticed Miller’s name in another museum gallery. Curiosity got the better of me and I wandered into a “then and now” panorama of the Hudson River. The project was a recreation of an 800 print strip that now included the addition of over 3,000 present day photographs. As I snaked through the room, I became the actual river. With present day photos on top, and the 1910 montage below, I was able to stand beneath the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge and span the generations. Needless to say, the exhibit was a pleasant surprise.

Beyond the Pale

The inner life of nature in the art of Linda Bayer Domanosky

Thursday, September 3 – Thursday, October 1, 2009

Linda Bayer Domanoski is a landscape artist whose images are clearly identifiable but whose deeper aesthetic goals can be guessed from some of her titles: her oil paintings “Gray Hope,” “Marsh Calligraphy,” and “Evanescence ” and her pastels “Z,” and “Late Summer Textures” are much more than reproductions of forms in nature; they are explorations of the abstract elements inherent in her figurative compositions, and of the moods they evoke. Her work is not a record of things seen but a recreation of things felt. Stretching the boundaries of the merely visual, the artist penetrates nature to capture what she has described as “the view of the recognizable world” that “sits on top of, or within, another space; one where a suggestion of communication surfaces.”

Ms. Domanoski is a graduate of the Ridgewood School of Art in New Jersey and of the Wolf Kahn Pastel Workshop at the National Academy School of Fine Arts in New York City and has also studied at the Universidad de las Americas in Mexico. She has taught fine art in Port Jervis for a decade and has had a long and distinguished career as a professional designer, providing paintings for many interior designers nationwide.

Her sensitive and subtle art has been exhibited widely in New York, Connecticut, and New Jersey as well as in Sweden. She has shown with Women Artists of the Hudson Valley at the Howland Cultural Center in Beacon, the Garnersville Arts Project in Garnersville, and Catskill Art Expo in Hurleyville, and is scheduled for solo exhibitions at the Delaware Valley Arts Alliance in Narrowsburgh and with the New Century Artists in Manhattan later this year. The winner of a best-in-show award, a first place merit award, and a first place in oils and acrylics at Ringwood Manor Association of the Arts shows, she has also received awards from the Pastel Society of America.

The Karpeles Manuscript Library Museum is located at 94 Broadway, across from City Hall, in the City of Newburgh. The Karpeles Museums are a national chain with nine in the U.S., specializing in the preservation and display of original, historically significant documents and manuscripts. Museum Hours: Thu.-Sat., 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday, 12 to 4 p.m.

Admission is always free.

The Executive Suite Gallery in the Orange County Government Center is hosting an exhibit of works by Montgomery artist Leslie Waxtel now through August 10, 2009. Leslie’s selection of works for this show are born from watercolor and oil and focus on regional townscapes, landscapes and nature studies. Many of her images capture bucolic settings with a soothing softness that transports the viewer to the time and place depicted. She describes her work as a synthesis of observation, imagination and emotional expression. The blending of color, light, pattern, mood, world events, relationships, dreams and memories are credited as her influences.

Originally from New York City, Leslie began her art studies at the Fashion Institute of Technology and School of Visual Arts. When she moved north to the Hudson Valley, she continued fostering her knowledge and practice of art at SUNY New Paltz. In addition to her training as a painter, she has taken workshops in papermaking, printmaking and book arts. She has also done graphic design and is a demonstrating artist for the Wallkill River School. The National Association of Women Artists, the Northeast Watercolor Society and the Woodstock Artists’ Association and Museum are organizations of which she is a member. Her works have been shown regionally in the Hudson Valley and New York City, as well as nationally in locations such as Largo, Florida and Vancouver, California. She has been the recipient of numerous awards and has work in many private collections.

The exhibit is located on the third floor of the Orange County Government Center in Goshen. It’s open to the public during business hours, Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. All are welcome. Artists living in Orange County who are interested in exhibiting in the Executive Suite Gallery can call Orange County Tourism at 845-615-3860 for more information.

Artist Name: Greg Miller
Discipline: Photography
Website info: www.gregmillerphotography.com

What is your favorite word?
Luminous
What is your least favorite word?
Can’t

What turns you on creatively, spiritually or emotionally?
Getting outside before dawn, and then watching the new day’s light magically transform the landscape. First with the pre-dawn glow, followed by the sun ray’s modeling the features of the landscape as the sun creeps above the horizon.

Tell us about your earliest memory that led you to becoming an
artist.
From my very early childhood, I remember a couple of impressionistic prints that my parents had hanging in the house – they opened my eyes to alternative way to represent our world.

What kind of space do you like to exist in when you are working?
Describe the space you typically work in. What type of space would you
ideally like to work in?
As a landscape/nature photographer I primarily work outside. I am in an almost constant state of awareness of how the light is playing on our world. When I am in my studio working in Photoshop or printing, I sometimes will be listening to jazz music, and sometimes I prefer total silence. I am happy with the spaces and have no strong desire to change them.

What inspirations do you draw on in Orange County or the Hudson
Valley?
Orange County has a wonderful array of subjects from the Hudson River, to mountains, wetlands, and the black dirt farms. These are the scenes that make Orange County unique and need to be preserved in order to keep Orange County form being just another generic suburbia.

What have you learned from other artists in the area?
Where do I start? While landscape photographers typically work in solitude, I pull many inspirations from those around me.

What profession outside of the arts would you like to attempt?
I might consider teaching. I have experience being a marathon running coach, ski instructor, backpacking instructor, and photography instructor. I enjoy helping other people achieve new goals.

If you could no longer work in your discipline, how else do you think you would express yourself?
I am a former trumpet playing jazz musician specializing in playing lead trumpet in big band orchestras. If I could no longer photograph I would probably pull my trumpet out of the closet and see what kind of chops I still have.

What are you working on this year?

I am working on a re-creation of the Hudson River Panorama – a continuous photograph of both shores of the Hudson River from the Statue of Liberty to Albany. This will be on display form July to December 2009 at the Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art at SUNY New Paltz as an 80 foot long print and also in book format; I will be an “Artist in Residence” at Acadia National Park in October; I am leading several photography workshops and tours for the Adirondack Photography Institute, The New Britain Museum of American Art, the Center for Photography at Woodstock, and privately; and I anticipate starting work on my next Rizzoli landscape photography book which was recently approved by Rizzoli’s board.

The Fenimore Art Museum is now accepting submissions for the second annual A Taste of the Sublime, to be held Saturday, August 8, 2009, on the museum’s spacious grounds overlooking Otsego Lake.

A Taste of the Sublime is a juried art invitational that welcomes artists from across New York State in a celebration of the historic relationship between the artists and the landscape that surrounds us. The event features food and beverage tasting, plein air painting, family activities, tours of the world-class collections at the Fenimore Art Museum, and — most importantly — landscape artists exhibiting, demonstrating, and selling their work.

Last year’s event was a great success with almost 700 people in attendance on a beautiful August day. This year, we will be offering a new slate of prize categories, as well as introducing a few new activities and highlights throughout the day.

If you are interested in submitting your work to our jury or have questions about the event, please contact us by email at k.betz@nysha.org or by phone at (607) 547-1461. An artist’s information packet and application form can also be found on the Fenimore Art Museum’s website by selecting the Call for Artists link on the main page at www.fenimoreartmuseum.org.

Prizes will be awarded in the following categories:
• Best Interpretation of New York Landscape
• Most Outstanding Use of Color
• Most Original Style
• Best Interpretation of the Sublime
• Audience Favorite
