Roslyn Fassett will be exhibiting works from “Beyond the Fabric”, a series of oil paintings based on African textile decoration in the lobby of the Newburgh Free Library from Jan. 8 – 29. The patterns cover the images of women beneath, almost as a veil. “It is a question about what do we really see?” said Fassett.

In addition, she will present a free lecture on the “Mysteries of African Textiles” at the Newburgh Library on Tues., Jan. 26 at 7 p.m. Her talk explores the techniques, patterns and designs of traditional African textiles. Fabrics from Ghana, Mali and Nigeria will be discussed. If they have any African fabrics to share, attendees are asked to bring them to the lecture.

Roslyn Fassett, who lives in Pine Island, studied art at Cooper Union and the Brooklyn Museum. She did graduate studies in Non-Western art at CCNY and has taught art history at Suny Purchase and New Paltz. Her interest has enticed her to Mali and Nigeria. Celebrate the holidays at a special concert at the Newburgh Free Library on Sun., Dec. 13 at 3 p.m. The free concert features vocalist Maureen Morrissey and keyboardist Steve Kessler performing music for the holiday season. In addition, the program will include a performance by the Voices of Hope Children’s Choir, a community organization for children in grades K-6 that is funded by St. George’s Church in Newburgh. Refreshments will be supplied by the Friends of the Newburgh Free Library.

No stranger to the Hudson Valley, Maureen Morrissey might best be described “incredibly versatile”. She masterfully uses her remarkable range, from soft and sweet soprano to warm and expressive contra alto, when performing an almost unbelievably diverse repertoire from American songbook standards of the 30’s & 40’s to cabaret, classical and more. Maureen has been a featured performer with the Bodles Opera House Variety Show and lead singer with the New York Swing Exchange and the Klassics. Other groups Maureen has appeared with include USMA Jazz Knights at West Point, The Saints Of Swing and pianist Dave Myers.

The dynamic work of these artists is complementary both emotionally and formally. Both use abstraction to create work in mixed media, Flaitz inspired by nano-photography–examination of the tiny computer chips that drive modern computer

technology–and Goldberg by the infinite flow and spirit of the Hudson River. The textured work of both artists is vibrant in composition and richly tactile in surface.

“Below the Surface” also features selected international artwork from the book

entitled Freedom and Art, a collaborative effort by 74 artists from 27 countries on six continents published to make a philosophical statement. Proceeds from the sale of the book, which will be available at the exhibition, are being donated to Amnesty International on behalf of Aung San Suu Kyi. The paintings selected for the exhibition from this elegant volume include work from artists in Portugal, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, Norway, Sweden, Hungary, Russia, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Libya, and South Africa.

The public is invited to meet the artists at a reception at the Karpeles Museum on Saturday, November 7, from 12 to 4 p.m.

At the plot’s core is Max’s ongoing battles with NBC executives who fear his humor is too sophisticated for Middle America.

The  OCAF is pleased to announce that this year’s 46th Annual Juried Artist’s Exhibition will be held at the Ritz Theater, 107 Broadway, Newburgh.

Due to the initial efforts of our recently retired secretary, Dave Nolan, we were able to procure this newly renovated, well-lit, wonderful space (large enough to accommodate approximately 60 works) for our event.  Upon visiting the site to ensure it’s viability and to finalize all details, it was revealed to me that 2 confirmed and possibly 4 performances are scheduled to take place during our exhibition time period, beginning with the always exceptional Bucky Pizzarelli performance scheduled for October 9^th & 10^th. Consequently, I was able to move our drop off and hanging date to Wednesday, October 7^th.

All members of current OCAF 2009 paid up art groups are invited to participate in this juried event that will take place from Wednesday Oct 7^th until Monday, November 30 (approximately 7 weeks) during a very popular visiting season in the Safe Harbors area.

Father and daughter Michael and Sarah Jarosko share a high level of technical skill but reflect different creative sensibilities in their art. The Montgomery, N.Y., painters will present a complementary range of paintings at the Karpeles Museum through the month of October 2009.

Michael Jaroszko is an award-winning artist and illustrator whose realistic paintings on varied subjects have been commissioned by many commercial organizations. The Canadian-born Montgomery resident studied at the Canterbury College of Art in England and has executed illustrations for such diverse companies as Reader’s Digest International, Scholastic Books, Grolier, Time-Life Books, the Smithsonian Institution, and Oxford University Press. His dynamic gallery art has been widely exhibited in local venues.

Michael’s daughter Sarah Jaroszko is a student at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles, California. Majoring in design, she has been hired as a fashion consultant by Pr-Active. She has been selected to teach fashion design for teens at the Wallkill River School of the Arts. Ms. Jaroszko’s delicate renderings of fabric and graceful flowing line employ a subdued palette and reflect an idealized sense of the human form.
