Roslyn Fassett will be exhibiting works from “Beyond the Fabric”, a series of oil paintings based on African textile decoration in the lobby of the Newburgh Free Library from Jan. 8 – 29. The patterns cover the images of women beneath, almost as a veil. “It is a question about what do we really see?” said Fassett.

In addition, she will present a free lecture on the “Mysteries of African Textiles” at the Newburgh Library on Tues., Jan. 26 at 7 p.m. Her talk explores the techniques, patterns and designs of traditional African textiles. Fabrics from Ghana, Mali and Nigeria will be discussed. If they have any African fabrics to share, attendees are asked to bring them to the lecture.

Roslyn Fassett, who lives in Pine Island, studied art at Cooper Union and the Brooklyn Museum. She did graduate studies in Non-Western art at CCNY and has taught art history at Suny Purchase and New Paltz. Her interest has enticed her to Mali and Nigeria.

Carol Flaitz and Carla Goldberg are innovative contemporary artists united by a common aesthetic sensibility and social perspective. Besides a similar creative philosophy, they share a profound concern for the use of art in the improvement of the human experience. Earlier this year the two artists were responsible for coordinating the Freedom and Art International Exhibition at the Mount Beacon Fine Art Gallery, designed to raise awareness of the imprisonment of the Burmese political activist and Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi.

The dynamic work of these artists is complementary both emotionally and formally. Both use abstraction to create work in mixed media, Flaitz inspired by nano-photography–examination of the tiny computer chips that drive modern computer

technology–and Goldberg by the infinite flow and spirit of the Hudson River. The textured work of both artists is vibrant in composition and richly tactile in surface.

“Below the Surface” also features selected international artwork from the book

entitled Freedom and Art, a collaborative effort by 74 artists from 27 countries on six continents published to make a philosophical statement. Proceeds from the sale of the book, which will be available at the exhibition, are being donated to Amnesty International on behalf of Aung San Suu Kyi. The paintings selected for the exhibition from this elegant volume include work from artists in Portugal, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, Norway, Sweden, Hungary, Russia, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Libya, and South Africa.

The public is invited to meet the artists at a reception at the Karpeles Museum on Saturday, November 7, from 12 to 4 p.m.

The Karpeles Manuscript Library Museum is located at 94 Broadway, across from City Hall, in the City of Newburgh.
Visions of Nature

Pastel renderings of nature by Paula Pearl

Thursday, July 2 – Friday, July 31, 2009

A versatile artist who has expressed her personal experience of nature in several media, Paul Pearl began her career in art as a photographer after graduating from Syracuse University with a degree in advertising art/photography. She has also exhibited her work in watercolors and in fabric art, sometimes combining fabric with paint and other materials in distinctive wall hangings. Her imaginative and award-winning quilts have been widely recognized for their creative design and selected for publication in the magazine Quilting Arts.

Ms. Pearl’s sensitivity to nature has also drawn her to the use of pastel, which permits her to evoke the subtle interplay of light and color in scenes of the shifting waters of lakes and streams in delicate colors. In compositions at once bold and tranquil she displays an extraordinary command of her exacting medium that has earned her an associate membership in the Pastel Society of America and a charter membership in the Pastel Society of New Jersey. She is also an associate member of Audubon Artists, the Catherine Lorillard Wolfe Art Association, the New Jersey Center for Visual Arts, and numerous other art societies. She is represented by the Swain Gallery in Plainfield, N.J., and has exhibited frequently in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.
