‘Art Along the Fence’ is a new series of art shows located in the Historic District of the City of Newburgh. Using the majestic wrought iron fence that greets visitors to the Washington’s Headquarters as a backdrop, we are gathering artists of all talents and mediums to show their work in a NYC style outdoor display.

Browse and buy art by regional artists in an urban street setting next to the park-like grounds of the Headquarters and a view of the Hudson.

This will be the first of three days for Art Along the Fence.  The next is Saturday, September 26th Also, as part of the Octoberfest on Saturday Oct. 10th (rain date 11th)

Aside from the scheduled program of models, there will be live music, and amenities such as water, drinks, box picnic lunches, maps, toilet facilities, and a friendly staff to help you enjoy the day.

Filled with jazz, blues and big band swing, this concert sensation is held every Wednesday and Thursday in July and August at 6:30 to 8:30 pm on the Newburgh waterfront. This years’ schedule is exceptionally dynamic and diverse. It features Grammy award winners “The Reese Project” and acclaimed jazz artists Ali Jackson, drummer extraordinaire from Jazz at Lincoln Center. There will also be a new component to the series this year to help salute the Quadricenttenial celebration. The concerts are a “bring your own chair event.” They are free and open to the public. Barry Bryson and the Jazz Du Jour Quintet perform sophisticated jazz classics with music ranging from Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington to Thelonius Monk and John Coltrane. Please join the Academy of American Poets as we present a poetry reading at Central Park’s Summer Stage, featuring three contemporary poets.

Elizabeth Alexander is a poet, essayist, playwright, and teacher . She composed and delivered “Praise Song for the Day” for the inauguration of President Barack Obama. In addition, she has published several books of poetry, including The Venus Hottentot (Graywold, 1990), Body of Life (1996), Antebellum Dream Book (2001), and American Sublime (2005), which was a finalists for the Pulitzer Prize and was one of the American Library Association’s “Notable Books of the Year.”

Thomas Sayers Ellis is the author of The Maverick Room (Graywolf, 2005), which was awarded the 2006 John C. Zacharis First Book Award. He is also the author of The Good Junk (1996); a chapbook The Genuine Negro Hero (Kent State University Press, 2001) and the chaplet Song On (WinteRed Press 2005). His Breakfast and Blackfist: Notes for Black Poets is forthcoming from the University of Michigan Press, Poets on Poetry Series.

Sharon Olds is the author of Satan Says (1980), which received the inaugural San Francisco Poetry Center Award. Olds’s following collection, The Dead & the Living (1983), received the Lamont Poetry Selection in 1983 and the National Book Critics Circle Award. Her other collections include Strike Sparks: Selected Poems (2004, Knopf), The Unswept Room (2002), Blood, Tin, Straw (1999), The Gold Cell (1997), The Wellspring (1995), and The Father (1992), which was shortlisted for the T. S. Eliot Prize and was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award. Olds held the position of New York State Poet from 1998 to 2000. She currently teaches poetry workshops at New York University’s Graduate Creative Writing Program.
