Roslyn Fassett will be exhibiting works from “Beyond the Fabric”, a series of oil paintings based on African textile decoration in the lobby of the Newburgh Free Library from Jan. 8 – 29. The patterns cover the images of women beneath, almost as a veil. “It is a question about what do we really see?” said Fassett.

In addition, she will present a free lecture on the “Mysteries of African Textiles” at the Newburgh Library on Tues., Jan. 26 at 7 p.m. Her talk explores the techniques, patterns and designs of traditional African textiles. Fabrics from Ghana, Mali and Nigeria will be discussed. If they have any African fabrics to share, attendees are asked to bring them to the lecture.

Roslyn Fassett, who lives in Pine Island, studied art at Cooper Union and the Brooklyn Museum. She did graduate studies in Non-Western art at CCNY and has taught art history at Suny Purchase and New Paltz. Her interest has enticed her to Mali and Nigeria. The W.A.L. invites all artists to attend free weekly art sessions to paint, draw and more from your own set-up or photos on Tuesday mornings from 9:30a-12:30p beginning Tuesday, January 5^th, 2010, at the Greenwood Lake Public Library at 79 Waterstone Road, Greenwood Lake, New York.

The Schweinfurth Art Center, Auburn, NY is holding a juried show open to all 2 and 3 dimensional New York State artists.

Made in NY 2010 is an annual juried exhibition featuring New York State artists. Two and three-dimensional work  is considered including, but not limited to, photography, sculpture, ceramics, painting, drawing, fiber and digital art.

All work must be completed in the last three years. Artists may submit up to two artworks for consideration. Entry is free for members and $25 for non-members. NEW Entry Deadline: January 15, 2010.

The 2010 Self-Portrait Cover Contest is open to all Art Calendar readers. Art Calendar will only accept electronic submissions made through www.ArtCalendar.com/CoverContest2010. No photographs, slides or CDs sent by mail to Art Calendar will be eligible. Limit of one entry per person.

Format instructions for the 2010 Self-Portrait Cover Contest:

• Images must be no larger than 2MB in size.
• Images should be submitted at 72 ppi, but winners will be required to provide the images at 300 ppi.
• The suggested image dimensions are approximately 600 x 480 pixels (height x width). Artwork outside these dimensions may be cropped to accommodate cover proportions.

SUBMISSION DEADLINE: The closing date for submitting an entry will be 23:59 on December 11, 2009, Eastern Standard Time. A panel comprised of Art Calendar staff and contributing writers will jury the contest. The winner will be notified by December 15, 2009.

Additional Rules & Information:

• All submitted work must be original.
• All submissions must be self-portraits, though not necessarily literal representations (i.e. collage, digital collage, abstract works also accepted).
• All 2-D and 3-D mediums accepted (e.g. drawings, paintings, photographs, sculpture, digital).
• The quality of the image in its entirety will be taken into account. Please make sure the work is well lit and the image is not distorted in any way.
• Please no images containing nudity, violence, sex, guns or skulls. Issues spend a month on the shelves of newsstands and bookstores within sight of children.
• Art Calendar reserves the right to reject any work for any reason.

We tend to stay away from most contests in the arts as many are veiled attempts at something else or have hidden fees or expectations.  Art Calendar is completely legit.  But please, before you enter ANY contest read all of the fine print.

Roberta Rosenthal, is an award winning artist, specializing in botanical art. Her art is created with watercolor, gouache, oils or mixed media for paintings, illustrations and designs. Roberta, a native New Yorker, is a graduate of the Fashion Institute of Technology with a degree in Textile Design and is a graduate of the High School of Art & Design in New York City. Roberta studied botanical art at the New York Botanical Garden, oil painting at the Art Students League, Asian brush painting at the Koho School of Sumi-e and privately with modern Chinese master Kou Liang Jui and introduced to C.C. Wang. In 1969 Roberta began her career as a designer for Macy’s and in 1971 at Leo Art Studio. Roberta founded RSR Designs a full service art studio in Manhattan in 1976. Her fine botanical illustrative art has been featured on postage stamps for the Marshall Islands and the Republic of Palau, books including Glory of the Garden and Rebecca’s Garden, Fine Gardening, Kitchen Garden, National Gardening and Horticulture magazines, packaging for Coty, Victoria’s Secret bath products, stationary for Caspari and ArtScroll Printing, giftware for Sven Jensen, ArtKraft Strauss Sign Corporation and licensed images of Disney products for Wendy Gell Jewelry.

We haven’t even gotten to her work at an art instructor at the New York Botanical Gardens.  But honestly, you need to know none of these things when viewing her work – the quality and exceptional detail speaks for itself.

Father and daughter Michael and Sarah Jarosko share a high level of technical skill but reflect different creative sensibilities in their art. The Montgomery, N.Y., painters will present a complementary range of paintings at the Karpeles Museum through the month of October 2009.

Michael Jaroszko is an award-winning artist and illustrator whose realistic paintings on varied subjects have been commissioned by many commercial organizations. The Canadian-born Montgomery resident studied at the Canterbury College of Art in England and has executed illustrations for such diverse companies as Reader’s Digest International, Scholastic Books, Grolier, Time-Life Books, the Smithsonian Institution, and Oxford University Press. His dynamic gallery art has been widely exhibited in local venues.

Michael’s daughter Sarah Jaroszko is a student at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles, California. Majoring in design, she has been hired as a fashion consultant by Pr-Active. She has been selected to teach fashion design for teens at the Wallkill River School of the Arts. Ms. Jaroszko’s delicate renderings of fabric and graceful flowing line employ a subdued palette and reflect an idealized sense of the human form.

The Karpeles Manuscript Library Museum is located at 94 Broadway, across from City Hall, in the City of Newburgh. The Karpeles Museums are a national chain with nine in the U.S., specializing in the preservation and display of original, historically significant documents and manuscripts. Museum Hours: Thu.-Sat., 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday, 12 to 4 p.m.
