Marbrook’s book of poetry Far from Algiers (Kent State University Press, 2008) was winner of the 2007 Stan and Tom Wick Poetry Prize. His poems have been recently accepted or published by American Poetry Review, Oberon, The Same, Reed, The Ledge, Istanbul Literary Review, Arabesques Literary and Cultural Review, Damazine, Perpetuum Mobile, Attic, and Chronogram.

Edward Hirsch praised Far from Algiers as a “splendid first book, which brings together the energy of a young poet with the wisdom of long experience.”

Marbrook started writing poems in Manhattan when he was fourteen. In his thirties he abandoned poetry after publishing a few poems in small journals, but he never stopped reading and studying poetry. Then at age sixty-seven, appalled by the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the poet within awakened. Stuffing sky-blue notebooks in his pockets, Marbrook began walking around Manhattan determined to affirm his beloved home in the wake of the nihilistic attacks. Far from Algiers emerged from hundreds of poems he has composed in the years since.

He is also a fiction writer whose work has been published by Prima Materia (Woodstock, NY), Breakfast All Day (UK and France), Online Originals (London), Potomac Review (Washington, DC), and The Country and Abroad (Pine Plains, NY). An excerpt from his unpublished novel Crowds of One won the Literal Latt fiction prize in 2008 under the title “Artists’ Hill.”

He worked for many years as a reporter and editor with Providence Journal, Elmira Star-Gazette, Baltimore Sun, Winston-Salem Journal, Washington Star, and other newspapers. Though born in Algiers, he grew up in New York.

Recently, one of the parents whose child attends BSP’s programming throughout the school year, arranged for substantial scholarship funding to ensure the SUMMER ARTS INTENSIVE’s existence this year, for youth who would like to attend the program but cannot afford to. Scholarships dollars are to be divided among the applicants on a first come, first serve basis. There are full scholarships, partial scholarships and work trades available at this point.

After running for many years, SAI was put on hiatus last year, due to financial constraints. But now registration is in full swing for the ever popular SUMMER ARTS INTENSIVE for youth in the Hudson Valley.

The Summer Program for youth through 12th grade includes comprehensive Theater Arts, DANCE (including hip hop, choreography, modern, jazz, street dance & more) Audio Recording, Digital Photography, Audio Engineering, Costuming, Vocal Training, Stage Management, Spoken Word, Technical Components and Creative Writing (for stage and song), all taught by specialists in each field.

The entire Youth Program at BSP is a 501(c)(3) not for profit organization. Any donations to the program are tax deductible. The parent arranged for the funding on the condition that they remain anonymous. Our SUMMER INTENSIVE costs a fraction of other programs in the area but the scholarship funds made it possible for us to offer the program once again.

Four (4) 2 week sessions beginning July 6th, offer youth 10 different categories to choose from as their “components”. They rotate through six of their chosen components throughout each day. BSP runs an after school Youth Arts program with a heavy emphasis on Theater & Dance during the school year. The SUMMER INTENSIVE, however, is Monday through Friday from 9:30AM – 3:30PM, and includes 6 – 8 additional components. Regularly scheduled classes are available until 6:00PM that are not part of the SAI.

The program is unique in that each session’s final schedule is completely decided by the enrollees as they sign up for their components. It is designed to be incessant so that the participants can continue with as many sessions as they are able. Skill building is continual and no two sessions are alike. And with our newly designated New York State (17,000 sq/ft) certified sound stage, we are expecting several Movies being filmed on site simultaneously, that enrollees will be able to witness and participate in as well.

Live music, poetry, local artists all combine for a fun experience.  It’s free of course, and what a better place to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon?

Please join the Academy of American Poets as we present a poetry reading at Central Park’s Summer Stage, featuring three contemporary poets.

Elizabeth Alexander is a poet, essayist, playwright, and teacher . She composed and delivered “Praise Song for the Day” for the inauguration of President Barack Obama. In addition, she has published several books of poetry, including The Venus Hottentot (Graywold, 1990), Body of Life (1996), Antebellum Dream Book (2001), and American Sublime (2005), which was a finalists for the Pulitzer Prize and was one of the American Library Association’s “Notable Books of the Year.”

Thomas Sayers Ellis is the author of The Maverick Room (Graywolf, 2005), which was awarded the 2006 John C. Zacharis First Book Award. He is also the author of The Good Junk (1996); a chapbook The Genuine Negro Hero (Kent State University Press, 2001) and the chaplet Song On (WinteRed Press 2005). His Breakfast and Blackfist: Notes for Black Poets is forthcoming from the University of Michigan Press, Poets on Poetry Series.

Sharon Olds is the author of Satan Says (1980), which received the inaugural San Francisco Poetry Center Award. Olds’s following collection, The Dead & the Living (1983), received the Lamont Poetry Selection in 1983 and the National Book Critics Circle Award. Her other collections include Strike Sparks: Selected Poems (2004, Knopf), The Unswept Room (2002), Blood, Tin, Straw (1999), The Gold Cell (1997), The Wellspring (1995), and The Father (1992), which was shortlisted for the T. S. Eliot Prize and was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award. Olds held the position of New York State Poet from 1998 to 2000. She currently teaches poetry workshops at New York University’s Graduate Creative Writing Program.
