Dune Trek, Kari Feuer 2008

“On the Horizon”, a solo exhibition by Kari Feuer of oil paintings and pastels, inspired by the countryside in northern Dutchess County where the painter lives, is on view in the Transverse Art Gallery at Locust Grove through July 26. Often, the first mark that a landscape painter makes is the horizon line, working out where to divide the sky from the land, the ether from the solid. The horizon, or lack of one, becomes a paramount artistic decision in the composition of the painting. “My landscape paintings are about the atmospheric properties of the setting, not about a realistic portrayal of the scenery. Both light and air are expressed in the surface particles of the painting as they dissolve by way of scraping, dry brushing and blending to reveal the frailty of the image in our memory and mood. The horizon is the point of reference for navigating through an image that is more conceptual than realistic.” – Kari Feuer.

Every year, 10×10x10 invites 10 artists from 10 communities to create installations in 10 empty storefronts in downtown Ellenville, NY.

Submitted signs will be incorporated in an installation for 3-4 weeks in beginning on July 11, 2009, the opening of the exhibit. The signs will also be part of a longer term online project. Artists will be fully credited online and at the exhibition site.

• There is no fee for submitting work.
• Anyone can submit, and multiple submissions are welcome.
• Two sizes of signs will be accepted: 12″x8″ and 19″x15″.
• Be aware that for installation purposes, signs will likely be attached to a structure via pins through the corners of the signs.
• However you choose to treat the sign and the medium you use is up to you. The only requirement is that it says “FOR RENT” and that it should have an area in which someone could write a phone # (no phone #’s will be written on the signs, but they should have the space for it.)
• Signs should be created using a sturdy but flexible material. ie: heavy card stock, poster board, watercolor, etc. (or even plastic or vinyl if you choose to rework an actual For Rent sign.)
• *Deadline for receipt of signs: Monday, June 22.*
• Drop off locations for signs will be set up in Beacon, Poughkeepsie and Ellenville, NY. Signs can also be mailed to: Christopher Albert 1172 North Ave Beacon, NY 12508.
• Please put your name, telephone, email and mailing addresses on the back of the sign.
• The signs will be returned after the conclusion of the exhibit.

Art Along the Hudsion is a regional collaboration. Through a cooperative media campaign, AAH promotes arts and cultural activities in each of these seven Hudson River cities. The Kickoff Reception includes light refreshments, live music. NEW THIS YEAR: Art Show by the artists from the seven cities. This is a juried exhibition and includes 3 artworks from each city. A program about the seven cities is scheduled for 6:45 pm. The event provides an opportunity to meet the artists and creators of this regional initiative, along with city officials actively working to revitalize their cities through the arts.

Art Along the Hudson celebrations are anchored by rotating Saturdays that spotlight each of the cities. Kingston celebrates First Saturdays; Beacon has Second Saturdays; Catskill and New Paltz celebrate Third Saturdays; and Newburgh highlights Last Saturdays plus Poughkeepsie and Peekskill have various art celebrations. Although activities happen year-round in all of the participating communities, a focus of one Saturday each month helps to strengthen and build awareness of each city’s arts initiatives. Programs feature a variety of art forms – from gallery and museum exhibits to music, dance, theatre and poetry. Special events range from sculpture exhibits, street fairs and parades, to art and history tours.

Art Along the Hudson is made possible with support from Associated Aircraft Group, Inc, Hudson Valley Federal Credit Union and the Dutchess County Arts Council. A special thanks goes to Carl VanBrunt of VanBrunt Gallery, Beacon, NY and Gary Gray of Lithography By Design in Highland, NY for creating and printing the brochure. “The art organizations of the 7 cities have all worked hard to bring our 2009 program together,” says Linda Hubbard, chair of Art Along the Hudson. “We also thank the participating municipalities, businesses, organizations and artists who make our program possible. Every year we grow in galleries, artists and events – I am continually amazed by the wealth of art in our Hudson Valley. The Art Show new this year is a great sampling of what the valley has to offer – do come!”

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

Geometry and color are the core of my work. The vibrancy of densely saturated pigments articulate luminous energy by their convergence and interaction. Abstract form shifts the content away from a particular identity to its fundatmental essence. The visual image may contain a rectangular shape, but that shape is more than one specific form – it resonates as every form.

The paintings are informed by minimalist reduction. Yet they move beyond that limitation to a language of reciprocity with the viewer. Balance and symmetry merge with color and form to realize an inclusive, radiant field.
