PELHAM ART CENTER presents a juried exhibition entitled, “Birthday!” In simultaneous celebration of the Art Center’s 25th anniversary at its present location on Fifth Avenue in Pelham, NY (Westchester) and the 40th anniversary of its first event as the Pelham Art Happening, artists are invited to submit artwork to be considered for exhibition in a group show on the theme of birthday. All media are eligible. Entry fee: $20.00. A $1,000 cash Juror’s Prize will be awarded. This exhibit and award are made possible with generous support from McClellan Sotheby’s International Realty of Pelham. The deadline is 5 February.

The Schweinfurth Art Center, Auburn, NY is holding a juried show open to all 2 and 3 dimensional New York State artists.

From their web site:

Made in NY 2010 is an annual juried exhibition featuring New York State artists. Two and three-dimensional work  is considered including, but not limited to, photography, sculpture, ceramics, painting, drawing, fiber and digital art.

All work must be completed in the last three years. Artists may submit up to two artworks for consideration. Entry is free for members and $25 for non-members. NEW Entry Deadline: January 15, 2010.

NY Studio Gallery is located in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, and unlike the many ‘pay to play’ galleries that infect downtown, NY Studio keeps to a traditional model of exhibitions.  One a year, the current deadline is 15 January, their panel selects two solo exhibitions from their applicants and give them a 5 week show.  A third artist is also given a show, but they are chosen by visitors votes during January.

They are looking for contemporary artists working in visual and installation arts.  A great idea would be to take a look at their previous exhibits online first.  The application is free, the deadline is 15 January and the process is completed online.

Beacon, New York, December 2, 2009 — Marion Royael Gallery, located at 460 Main Street, Beacon, New York 12508, a full service contemporary art gallery featuring a mix of sculptures, paintings and mixed media works, announces its grand opening. As an introduction to the Beacon community the opening exhibition will showcase selected works by the owners Barbara A.G. and Steven Paul Riddle as well as notable architectural assemblage artist Gordon Graff.

“With our passion for art and love of the area and its culture, it seems like a natural step to open an art gallery here,” says Barbara Riddle, Co-Owner of the Gallery. “We are excited to bring the very best emerging contemporary artists and share their work with this community. Along with the sculptures and paintings, the gallery itself is a work of art with high ceilings, an industrial feel and plenty of room for larger works. The exhibition space is located in the midst of the vibrant artistic community of Beacon, New York which boasts the Dia Beacon, many outstanding fine art galleries, www.beaconarts.org, top notch restaurants and a bevy of interesting and unique boutiques.

The gallery plans to hold future monthly shows featuring established names, as well as the most innovative emerging artists.

Miller’s photographs were arranged from south to north and allowed spectators to walk along the river, enjoying the vivid images he managed to create. The images were so striking that if you stood long enough, looking into the landscape, you could picture yourself atop Storm King Mountain or aside the George Washington Bridge.

The first image that caught my eye was that of a rainbow over Bear Mountain. The image brilliantly showcased the light in the lower right quadrant with complete adoration. While there were many distractions, and places for my eyes to wander, I instantly narrowed in on the rainbow and the other elements became secondary.

Another photograph which caught my eye was that of Stockport farm, taken in 2007. The image was that of a sunset and what my mother always considered “sky blue pink.” I’m certain this wasn’t an original phrase but I have always attributed that time of night to her and when I first heard the term. Standing there, it harkened me back to my childhood and brought with it a sense of comfort. It was one of those moments where I was transported back in time; I was on my porch watching the sunset as opposed to standing amidst other museum onlookers.

While the majority of the prints were bright and vibrant, others had a dark appeal. It proved Millers talent, showcasing not only the majesty of the Hudson River but also the gritty underbelly it tends to possess.

As I was about to leave, I noticed Miller’s name in another museum gallery. Curiosity got the better of me and I wandered into a “then and now” panorama of the Hudson River. The project was a recreation of an 800 print strip that now included the addition of over 3,000 present day photographs. As I snaked through the room, I became the actual river. With present day photos on top, and the 1910 montage below, I was able to stand beneath the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge and span the generations. Needless to say, the exhibit was a pleasant surprise.

• Artists are invited to submit works in all media and of all subjects for this regional juried exhibition.
• The exhibition is open to artists from Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, and Vermont, who can hand deliver and pick up accepted works of art.
• The juror is Patricia Phagan, Straus Curator of Prints and Drawings at the Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center, Vassar College.

The 2010 Self-Portrait Cover Contest is open to all Art Calendar readers. Art Calendar will only accept electronic submissions made through www.ArtCalendar.com/CoverContest2010. No photographs, slides or CDs sent by mail to Art Calendar will be eligible. Limit of one entry per person.

Format instructions for the 2010 Self-Portrait Cover Contest:

• Images must be no larger than 2MB in size.
• Images should be submitted at 72 ppi, but winners will be required to provide the images at 300 ppi.
• The suggested image dimensions are approximately 600 x 480 pixels (height x width). Artwork outside these dimensions may be cropped to accommodate cover proportions.

SUBMISSION DEADLINE: The closing date for submitting an entry will be 23:59 on December 11, 2009, Eastern Standard Time. A panel comprised of Art Calendar staff and contributing writers will jury the contest. The winner will be notified by December 15, 2009.

Additional Rules & Information:

• All submitted work must be original.
• All submissions must be self-portraits, though not necessarily literal representations (i.e. collage, digital collage, abstract works also accepted).
• All 2-D and 3-D mediums accepted (e.g. drawings, paintings, photographs, sculpture, digital).
• The quality of the image in its entirety will be taken into account. Please make sure the work is well lit and the image is not distorted in any way.
• Please no images containing nudity, violence, sex, guns or skulls. Issues spend a month on the shelves of newsstands and bookstores within sight of children.
• Art Calendar reserves the right to reject any work for any reason.

We tend to stay away from most contests in the arts as many are veiled attempts at something else or have hidden fees or expectations.  Art Calendar is completely legit.  But please, before you enter ANY contest read all of the fine print.
